I began my journalism career when I was 18 years old. Just out of high school, I wanted to work to pay for college, but I wanted to do something more than working for a fast-food joint or retail store. My father had worked with the courts reporter for my hometown newspaper and I asked him to talk to her about opportunities. My meeting with her turned into a more than 20-year journalism career.
Later, I saw that the best way to advance was to learn design skills. I’d always been a computer junkie, so the progression was easy. Design led to editing. Editing led to leadership.
I eventually returned to school for a bachelor’s degree in information system. My degree helped me get a position as an application manager for the accounting/billing system at a newspaper in Greensboro, N.C. I returned to the newsroom help with the implementation of pagination, marrying print and advertising into a single, computer-based system.
Eventually, I went back to school again for an MBA.
Despite growing toward a more technically-oriented career, the writing skills I learned as a journalist transitioned well into areas where communication and writing were important.
Today, I work with businesses to improve their Web presence to achieve their business goals. I’ve partnered with some very experienced technical and business professionals in order to give the best advice and service to clients.
